#36: Are We DOOMED with the Real Money Gaming Ban?
India bans real money online gaming—millions affected, jobs at risk, creators silenced. Is this the end, or the start of a bigger fight?

#36: Are We DOOMED with the Real Money Gaming Ban?
Yesterday, 20th August 2025, was a bit of a gut punch for the Indian gaming community. The Lok Sabha just passed a bill that bans all real money online gaming, from poker and rummy to fantasy sports and beyond. If you play for actual cash, it’s curtains, no matter how much skill or strategy is involved.
The government says it’s all about protecting folks from gambling-related harm, fraud, addiction, and the heartbreak that sometimes follows big losses. There’s talk about keeping the young and vulnerable safe and cutting down on all kinds of shady online dealings. So yes, on paper, it sounds like they’re trying to do some good.

But here’s where the real trouble starts. This sweeping ban will slam the brakes on a massive engine that fuels jobs, businesses, and tax revenues. We’re talking about an ecosystem that pulls in over ₹2 Trillion annually and supports more than 2,00,000 people across hundreds of companies. This sector was booming and expected to nearly double soon.
What now? With the ban, all those jobs could be lost overnight. Companies that invested heavily will be left out in the cold. And those millions of players are unlikely to just stop, they’ll flock to offshore sites, usually unregulated and risky, taking their cash out of India’s economy and into the pockets of operators nobody can control. It’s like trying to stop the tide with a teaspoon.

Between direct jobs in gaming companies, marketing, tournament organisation, tech development and indirect jobs linked to fantasy sports and cricket sponsorships, this is a devastating blow. It’s not just the core industry players who are reeling, the ripple effects cut across a huge ecosystem of PR agencies, digital marketing professionals, and content creators. For example, fantasy sports had spun off a booming creator economy, YouTubers, streamers, and data-driven “fantasy tipsters” who built large audiences and were earning handsomely by sharing player stats, predictions, and team selection insights. These creators, many of whom had turned their passion into full-fledged careers, are now staring at a dead end.
The industry represents a bustling ecosystem, employing lakhs of people who will now face uncertainty. Local investments, over 500 million gamers, FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) inflows, and tax revenues risk drying up at just one stroke.
Nazara Technologies, India’s only listed gaming firm with a 46% stake in Moonshine Technologies (the parent company of PokerBaazi), has felt the hit sharply. Following the bill’s passage, Nazara’s stock plunged over 20% in just two days, reflecting investor anxiety over the imminent loss of its real money gaming exposure.
India’s real-money gaming ban shakes up the industry, Nazara shares drop by 10%.
