#13: Champions Bring the Trophy Home: A Double Triumph 🏆

The air crackles with anticipation, a palpable energy that permeates both the cricket stadium and the hushed, focused rooms of high-stakes poker. “Champions bring the trophy home,” the phrase echoes, resonating with a nation hungry for victory. And in 2025, that hunger isn't limited to the hallowed turf of the cricket pitch.

The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, a cricketing spectacle that returned after 8 years, is in full swing in Pakistan and India. India, with its characteristic blend of power and finesse, is carving a path of dominance, beating Bangladesh and Pakistan in the group stage and making their way to the semi-finals already.

But other, perhaps less visible, triumphs are unfolding concurrently. In the world of live poker, Indian players are making waves, their names flashing across international leaderboards. Since the dawn of 2025, a surge of Indian poker champions has emerged, conquering prestigious tournaments across the world. They’ve brought home not just prize money but titles, trophies, and a newfound inspiration for other budding Indian poker players.

At first glance, cricket and poker seem worlds apart. One is a team sport, a spectacle of physical prowess and strategic brilliance, played out under the blazing sun. The other is a solitary battle of wits, a psychological duel waged in the cool, controlled environment of a casino or poker room. Yet, both share a fundamental element: the pursuit of excellence, the relentless drive to win. Both demanding skills, strategies, and mental fortitude.

Let’s look at some of the successes of Indian poker players on the global stage of late. Just as the cricketers are battling for national glory, these poker champions have attended events like Poker Dream 15 (Malaysia), APT Manila Classic (Philippines), and others.

Let’s look at one such champion in Kunal Patni, who won a couple of APT titles to wrap up 2024, and he began 2025 on a better note, winning both of the APT Mystery Bounty Hunter (Event #9) and the Single Day High Roller (Event #75), taking home combined winnings of $65k and more, also moving into the top 10 of India’s all-time money list.

And he wasn’t the only one getting titles at Manila, with J Raju winning a title at Philippines National Cup (Event #1) for $13k in prize money; Birangat Gambhir won the Hyper Turbo (Event #27) for a smaller prize of $4k; wrapping up the series was Aviansh Tauro, who won the Hyper Turbo (Event #99) title. A whole lot of silverware being brought home to India, isn’t it?!

Elsewhere at Poker Dream 15, Siddharth Arya Jolly led a smaller Indian contingent to win the No Limit Hold'em—Turbo Event for around $2,600. At the WPT Cambodia Championship, Arjun Agrawal took down Megastack Mini High Roller (Event #4) and multiple Indians cashed in the WPT Cambodia Championship Event, where Ankit Ahuja missed the trophy after busting in 3rd place.

This influx of international poker titles is more than just a personal triumph for the players. It's a catalyst for the growth of the Indian poker industry. It's inspiring a new generation of players, demonstrating that poker is a game of skill, strategy, and discipline, and not just chance. They’re bringing glory to the country and their successes could give rise to more such titles in months to come.

Cricket and Poker

The parallels are striking with poker and the cricket. Just as the Indian cricket team’s success fuels national pride and inspires young athletes, the poker champions are igniting a passion for the game within India. The media coverage, the social media buzz, the stories of strategy and calculated risks—all contribute to a growing awareness and appreciation for poker.

The "Champions bring the trophy home" narrative, therefore, extends beyond the cricket field. It encompasses the quiet victories achieved in the poker rooms, the strategic triumphs that are elevating India's standing in the global poker community. Both sports, in their own unique ways, are contributing to a sense of national pride and demonstrating the potential of Indian talent.

Ultimately, whether it's the roar of the cricket stadium or the hushed intensity of a poker tournament, the desire to excel, to conquer, and to bring the trophy home remains the driving force. And in 2025, India is witnessing triumphs everywhere, testimony to the nation's unwavering spirit of competition.
