#19: Does WSOP 2025 Entice You?

Right then, let's get down to brass tacks and have a proper look at whether the 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) tickles your fancy, shall we? With the anticipation building, it’s high time we had a talk about what's in store for those of us keen on a bit of felt action in Las Vegas this year.

WSOP 2025: What's Brewing?

Expect the usual suspects to be back in town at the Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas for WSOP 2025. While the Main Event, the granddaddy of them all, will be the highlight, the sheer variety of tournaments on offer is what makes the WSOP such a compelling proposition. For one, there’s a record 100 bracelet events on offer this year, once again allowing India a better chance to get one piece of gold back home.

Secondly, there’s the ‘Battle of the Ages’ event where players above the age of 50 years will play the first flight and then the others in the next flight before they merge on Day 2. Lastly, there’s the ‘T.O.R.S.E.’ event, which is a new mixed-game tournament that replaces Limit Hold'em with Triple Draw Lowball.

With $50k, what can you play?

Approximately $50,000 seems to be a decent budget for Indian players, considering travel and accommodation, as well as the $10,000 shot at the Main Event. Let's look at some potential options for tournaments to play:

  • WSOP Main Event: This is the one everyone dreams of, with a buy-in typically around $10,000. This would be your flagship event, soaking up a significant chunk of your budget but offering the ultimate poker glory. Jonathan Tamayo won the WSOP 2024 for a whopping $10 million.

  • Smaller NLHE Events: The WSOP schedule is peppered with numerous No-Limit Hold'em tournaments with buy-ins ranging from a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand. You could comfortably enter several of these, giving you multiple shots at a score. For instance, events like the Millionaire Maker (around $1,500 buy-in) or the Monster Stack (around $1,500 buy-in) offer large fields and substantial prize pools for a relatively modest outlay. Both are scheduled for June 2025.

  • Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO): If you fancy four cards instead of two, there are various PLO events at different buy-in levels. These can be a thrilling and potentially lucrative alternative to Hold'em.

  • Daily Deep Stacks: These are daily tournaments with smaller buy-ins (typically a few hundred dollars) that offer a good way to get some volume in and potentially build your bankroll for the bigger events.

  • Satellites: Don't forget the numerous satellite tournaments running both online and live at the venue. These offer a more economical route into the larger events, including the Main Event. You could dedicate a portion of your budget to trying to win a seat for a fraction of the direct buy-in.

With $50k, a sensible strategy might involve playing the Main Event, perhaps three to five mid-stakes No-Limit Hold'em or PLO events, and sprinkling in some smaller buy-in tournaments along with satellites.

Budget like a pro:

Sticking to a budget is crucial for a successful and enjoyable WSOP trip. Here’s a rough breakdown to consider:

  • Tournament buy-ins: Allocate a specific amount for tournament entries. Be realistic about how many you can play and factor in re-entries if that's part of your strategy.

  • Accommodation: Las Vegas hotel prices can fluctuate wildly, especially during the WSOP. Booking well in advance is essential to secure a decent rate. If you’re going with friends, you can pool in and book a good AirBnb as well.

  • Flights: Return flights from Las Vegas can be a significant expense. Again, booking early and being flexible with your travel dates can help. Aim to budget around $1,000 - $1,500.

  • Food and drink: Eating out in Vegas can be pricey. Factor in daily expenses for meals and drinks. Look for more affordable options outside the main tourist areas, or consider self-catering some meals if your accommodation allows.

  • Travel and local transport: Factor in the cost of getting to and from the airport, as well as local transport between your hotel and the tournament venues. Staying on the strip will save you these costs.

Busting a myth or two:

Let's have a go at debunking a couple of common misconceptions about WSOP:

  • Myth 1: You need to be a seasoned pro to have any chance. While the WSOP does attract the best players in the world, it also draws a vast number of amateurs and recreational players. Many events have relatively low buy-ins, and it's certainly possible for someone with solid fundamentals and a bit of luck to go deep and even win a bracelet.

  • Myth 2: Everyone at WSOP is a stone-faced robot. While some players adopt a very serious demeanor, the WSOP is also a vibrant and social event. You'll find plenty of friendly banter and camaraderie at the tables. Of course, maintaining a good poker face is still advisable!

Tips from top pros:

Dhaval Mudgal & Kunal Patni

Dhaval Mudgal on places to dine in Vegas – “Mint Indian Bistro off the strip is the bomb. Other non-Indian favourites include Sushi Samba for a splurge, the Earl of Sandwich for dinner breaks and you can also find tons of the Thai places off the Strip.”

Kunal Patni on various tournaments to play – “You are like a kid in a candy store. There are good value tournaments happening by the hour in different casinos across the city. You will be spoilt for choices. Choose from the following series—WSOP, Venetian, Planet Hollywood, Wynn, and don’t miss the WPT Aria 500.”

So, does the WSOP 2025 entice you? With careful planning, a solid budget, and a bit of preparation, it could be an unforgettable experience, offering the chance to test your skills against a diverse field and perhaps even etch your name into poker history. Good luck at the felt!
